Fake Browser Update is Ransomware

A recent trend in cyber attacks have taken the form of browser updates. When you open your browser it informs you that it is out of date and needs to be updated, when you click on update the malware is deployed.

This attack can take the form of Chrome (pictured above) , Internet Explorer, Opera, or Firefox browser updates. These attacks started in the spring of 2018, but have been refined to include new techniques and toolkits.

Once deployed the attackers use a combination of automatic and manual tools to gather confidential information, and deploy ransomware.

Be on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary. Often times these attacks will have misspelled words or redirect you to a URL that you do not recognize. If you come across anything that is suspicious, immediately stop what your are doing and contact your system administrator or IT Managed Service Provider.
